Description:
The first part of this work tells the story of the Aztecs, from
when they left the mythical Aztlán to when
they settled on Chapultepec Hill, the construction of the Great
Temple and the end of the Aztec empire as a result of the Spanish
Conquest.
The
second part describes the Sacred Precinct, with selected photographs,
following the tour visitors make step by step as they
appreciate the architecture and sculptures.
The
third section of the guide consists of a tour through the different
rooms of
the
museum, opened in 1987 to display the archaeological finds
made in the main buildings of Great Tenochtitlan.
Designed
by the
architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, the museum reflects the
building plan of the Great Temple itself. Its eight rooms
display spectacular
original pieces: life-size terracotta figures, objects made
of greenstone, shell, obsidian, turquoise. gold and other materials
found in caches of offerings. These all help to show the
mythic
and religious art of what was one of the last cultural expressions
of pre-Hispanic Mexico: the Aztecs.
Available in: Spanish, English, French. German.
