Campeche, “Mexico’s hidden treasure”, is a territory for lovers of nature, archeology, colonial art and popular culture.
This state saw the flowering of one of the ancient world’s most important civilizations: Mayan culture. The vestiges of numerous cities of the Pre-classic and Classic periods today arouse enormous admiration. You can visit: Edzná, Calakmul, Becán, Santa Rosa Xtampac, Hormiguero, Chicanná, magnificent works that also represent the four most significant styles of Mayan architecture: Río Bec, Chenes, Puuc and Petén.
Founded in 1540, the city of Campeche (“World Heritage Site”) offers in its historical center a great variety of religious buildings of the Viceregal epoch, historical monuments and an impressive system of fortifications, an example of Spanish military architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries. These structures formed part of the integral defensive system for protection against pirate attacks.
The state of Campeche also possesses a popular culture that comes to light in its music, dances, fiestas, crafts and culinary arts.
Did you know that upon the Spaniards’ arrival, old Campeche, or Ah Kin Pech (tick serpent), was a prosperous Mayan town of 3,000 houses.
Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, sent by the governor of the island of Cuba, discovered Campeche on March 22, 1517 and in 1530 Governor Francisco de Montejo arrived in Campeche and the chiefs swore loyalty to the Crown.
