In Yucatán, visitors can admire an architectural legacy of enormous dimensions. Chichén Itzá, Kabáh, Uxmal, Labná, Dzibilchaltún or Ek Balam are but some of the sites where the Mayas left evidence of their architectural talents. In these cities it is possible to recognize, through the Puuc, Chenes and Maya-Toltec styles, an uninterrupted historical sequence from 550 A.D. up to the arrival of the Spaniards.
But the arrival of the conquistadors did not eclipse Mayan culture. The Mayas of Yucatán built colonial cities that have their own seal and their lordly haciendas are historical monuments.
Nor did modernity oppose Mayan traditions. It is difficult to think of another place where music, clothing, food, language and housing have as much vitality as in Yucatán. And to that we must add the geographical riches: jungle landscapes, deep “cenotes”, crystalline beaches, reefs, lagoons and labyrinthine grottoes. In fact, nothing has been able to mitigate the originality of Mayan culture, neither the conquest, nor civil wars, nor globalization. Its buildings, languages and gastronomy have already lasted for millennia.
Did you know that in Yucatán Mayan culture is one of the liveliest in the Republic and that its fusion with Spanish culture, before being overshadowed by it, gave it a strength that endures to this day.
After the Spanish conquest, the splendid colonial cities fused Mayan genius and the Spanish dramatic spirit and shaped a very particular form of expression that can be seen in architecture, sculpture, painting and the arts.
